Design Philosohpy

Glance at the sun.
See the moon and the stars.
Gaze at the beauty of the earth’s greenings
Now, think.

-Hildegard von Bingen

The stars, a sunset, a green pasture, the soothing sound of a creek, crickets chirping in the evening.  This is good design.  This is beautiful design.  It is so good, and it works so well together because of the designer.  God.  I believe that He is the ultimate designer, the ultimate architect.  When I think about design, I think about what is beautiful to the God that created it all.  Think of the earth.  The mountains and valleys, the grasses and trees, the rivers and lakes, the honesty and loyalty of animals, the warmth of the sun, the mystery of the stars and moons.  All of these elements work together to create a beautiful piece of artwork that we get to live with everyday.  This is the epitome of good, beautiful design.  How can we compete?  We should not try to compete with God’s design, we should work with it, imitate it, use it as a template.  We should use the beautiful materials that God has blessed us with and make the most of them.

For me, there is no beauty in excess.  Simplicity is where beauty lies.  Life greatest pleasures are those that are simple.  A good designer takes only what they need and still builds something beautiful and inspiring.  If a designer needs to deplete the earth’s resources to build something magnificent, then they are not a good designer.  Anyone can build something beautiful with endless resources.  What makes a simple structure beautiful is the materials used and the construction used to build it.  I believe that quality construction and materials set good design apart from bad design.  A well made product has no need for fussy decoration.  Something that is made well, no matter how simple a design, will be more beautiful in the end than a poorly made product with embellishments covering up mistakes.  Quality construction and materials also add instant class and sophistication, which is en element that I try to convey in all of my projects, no matter what style or theme the project takes on.  It looks classy, sophisticated.  That is one thing that I try to convey in all my designs, no matter what style or theme the project takes on.
